Brawn & Brains

Brawn & Brains is a cosy little cafe tucked away in the quaint old airport road estate, where the old Singapore Badminton Hall is.

Ever since trying them out early last year, this cafe quickly became one of our favourite places for a cuppa and chill. You'll always be welcomed with a warm and genuine "hello!" and smile from basically everyone there :)

It's also great that this place is a stone's throw away from town (Suntec/ City Hall) and is easily accessible by quite a number of buses (e.g.: 7, 197, 70).

You'd be happy to know that the bus stop is right outside.   

This pic was taken during off their peak period, as you can see everyone has a seat to enjoy their coffee and snack.

During their peak period like lunch time..omg its totally packed! 

They have two coffee blends for you to choose from; Single Origin Guatemala blend & Colombian Supreme & Sumatra Lin Tong blend. 

They also serve small bites like croissants, tarts, pastries for those feeling peckish and if you're a little hungrier, they also have wraps and sandwiches.

Tried the lemon tart, 

its quite good cos its neither too sour nor too sweet and the crust is not the hard type so it won't really flake when you cut it.

One of the best things I've tried!

The curried chicken sandwich, well this originally comes in a wrap for but I'm a sandwich kinda girl so I opted for swap.

My, my...the curry chicken chunks were so tasty!

It comes with chips on the side and they go so well ;)

Salted Caramel Swirl was not bad too!

Here's what I wore

I wanted my houndstooth vest to be the focal point of my outfit so I kept everything else simple, black on black so the whole outfit had a monochrome theme going on..
But of course, I'm not one to stick to a pure monochrome theme so I added a pop of yellow with my bag!
There you have it, a modern, minimalist look of the day :)

RONIN Cafe

Ronin cafe on Hong Kong Street has long been on Alex's list of cafes to try so we finally went to try it last week :)
Located a stone's throw away from Clarke Quay Mrt station, Hong Kong Street was not difficult to locate but the actual cafe was pretty well hidden!
With no signboard or any indication that its a cafe, the only clue we had was the unit number 17.

From the exterior, the cafe looked like a bar cos it was dimly lit but once we stepped in, we were welcomed by the warm greetings from their friendly staff and shown to our seat.
The cafe was pretty packed even though it was a midweek afternoon.
I guess it's cos the famous Bak Kut Teh was nearby and everyone was there for their dose of caffeine and chill out alittle before heading back to the office ;)

Very cool industrial interior decor.
Though the industrial concept for cafes are a dime in a dozen, this place stands out for their laid back atmosphere and unique combination of types of wooden furniture.
You can see from the pictures that the tables were of varying shapes and height and the use of different types of chairs for various parts of the cafe.
Patrons can choose which section they prefer to chill at ;)
I like to admire the different types of lights at these cafes.

We were there for brunch, our server recommended the Japanese Beef Curry Rice, so Alex tried that.

I tried their highly raved Brioche French Toast with Braised Apple and Bacon.
What can I say?
The perfect pairing of savoury bacon, sweet maple syrup and braised apple was well... purrfect!
Generous portions too, so it was filling for me.
I'd love to go back to have this again!

THE BAKERY CHEF

Late Sunday afternoons spent with Alex are one of my favourite things to do.

We'd go in search of cafes around our sunny little island, unwinding over a nice cup of coffee and slice of cake.   

Its nice to just enjoy the comfortable silence and the ambience.

These Sundays are precious cos they only last from May till October before I start working till late at night on weekends which only leaves us with weekdays.

Anyway, we checked out The Bakery Chef at Bukit Merah Central cos my mom recommended their rainbow cake and we've also read some good reviews about their red velvet cake.

The 'woody' exterior of the cafe looks inviting and it definitely stands out among the other shops along this stretch of HDB flats.

More and more cafes are popping up at older HDB estates,

not that I'm complaining or anything.

I do enjoy seeing a little pop of modernism amidst nostalgia here and there but I just hope it doesn't change the entire 'feel'  of the place.

They've got an array of cakes, waffles, coffee and beverages to choose from,
I really like the colour scheme of the front counter and cake display.

With so many choices to choose from, which ones shall we pick?
The 'special' cake for that week was 'CHOCOLATE RAINBOW', shall we go for that? 
Or the normal rainbow which is equally pretty?
Hmm...decisions, decisions...

We finally decided on the Chocolate RAINBOW Cake and Red Velvet!
Look, so pretty!

Verdict?

The chocolate rainbow cake was nice and pretty cos of all the floral piping decor but I'd like to try the normal one the next time :)

There were also chocolate bits in between the layers.

Great for chocoholics :D

The Red Velvet?

I've had red velvet cakes and waffles that were not very fantastic,

but cos of the recommendation on danielfooddiary.com,

we decided why not just give it a try?

It was a great decision!

Okay, first look?

Looks normal...but first bite??

AMAZING!

Like no other red velvet creations I've tasted.

It was delicious, the taste of the cream cheese and the red velvet sponge went so well together!

The sponge cake portion was light and fluffy, not dense and heavy like some others I've tried previously.

I'd recommend anyone who's going to check out this cafe to try their red velvet cos we are definitely gonna go back for more!
